UpDating Review
TLDR: one of a kind show experience but just not for me because I cannot relate this kind of humor and don’t personally find it comfortable to sit through.
I had seen clips from UpDating shows for quite a while on Instagram and had been so interested in going to a show myself - I was able to snag a few tickets when they announced their new tour through NYC! It was hosted at City Winery in Pier 57 (also happens at several other venues in different boroughs) and it was a great space to just get some wine and food before/during the show. The show started off ok and as expected - they brought in the first two single guests, had them pitch themselves, and after talking to each other, decide if it was a match or not; the show went on and the hosts were very interactive with the audience!
The part that didn’t sit well with me was the flat humor that (to me) was borderline offensive - there were comments about how someone looked formulated on what they said, some degrading snarks about certain kinds of people, etc. A lot of the sarcasm was most definitely addressed towards men and while I don’t identify as a man myself, I found it to be offensive or rather just backwards. The show wasn’t fully marked by negativity though - a lot of it was very funny and it is designed after comedy shows but I think some of the humor fell short and could be questionable. In hindsight, I should’ve realized the show wasn’t for me but I wouldn’t have been able to really tell based on what I saw on social media because of course only filtered content is displayed for the mass public and this is show biz. I would recommend watching full episodes based on location on their YouTube channel to figure out if it’s for you - it’s a great litmus test to see if you can handle that kind of humor!
