The new Broadway musical I just can’t stop thinking about
The other day, I had the opportunity to attend a preview of a performance of Maybe Happy Ending at the Belasco Theater starring Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen. This story revolves around two helper bots, both obsolete at this point in the future, who are living at a robot retirement home across the hall from each other. The two robots meet, quickly create a connection, and embark on a journey. This was the most emotionally moved I have been by a show on Broadway. I cried so much while watching the show and not just out of sadness. I haven’t stopped thinking about the show since I saw it a few days ago. The songs are so beautiful, the set design is fantastic and some of the most advanced sets I’ve seen recently, and, most importantly, the way they depict human, or non-human, the connection is so beautiful.
There are two things I will warn people of when seeing this show. The first is that this show runs 100 minutes with no intermission. This means that I would firmly recommend getting there early and take time to run to the bathroom. The other major thing comes in the form of seating. There are three levels of seats and there is some staging at the very front of the stage. I hear that from the balcony, these scenes can be hard to see. I was sitting in the last row of the center mezz and I could see those scenes if I sat slightly upright. There are also two instances where there were things high up on the stage that I had trouble seeing, but the row right in front of me probably saw just fine. I would also recommend trying to get a seat in the center because I can see sightlines becoming an issue when sitting on the sides / there is a large possibility for several seats to be partial view.
Overall, I loved this show and I hope to be able to go back very soon to see it again when they open officially. New shows on Broadway always have a hard time gaining attention because you have to take a risk on the material, but I encourage anyone to please go see this show.
