The Orchid Show at NY Botanical Gardens
After visiting the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Friday, I decided to visit the New York Botanic Garden in the Bronx on Saturday. Even with the on and off rain all day, it was still such an amazing visit. Luckily, my urge to visit the garden corresponded with the annual Orchid Show!
While the tickets are decently expensive and priced even higher on weekends ($35/$39 for adults and $31/$35 for students), I think it was definitely worth it as your ticket includes admission to the gardens and the ability to check out the orchid show. I ended up spending around an hour and a half or so at the orchid show and then an additional three and a half hours strolling the grounds and looking at the other plants on site so it felt well worth it for me. I also made the decision to purchase the individual annual membership ($99) since I’ve been wanting to go to the train show they host in the winter and as long as I go three times this year, it’s well worth it.
Regarding the show itself, this year it was themed around Mexican Modernism and the Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán. The orchids were absolutely gorgeous and the photo spots inspired by Barragán’s garden designs were perfect for a spring photo shoot! As I mentioned, I spent at least an hour and a half exploring the orchid show. I didn’t expect to spend that much time in the conservatory but it’s much larger than it appears from the front and it holds ~20 different sections!!
Once you’re done exploring the conservatory, you still have the rest of the 250 acres of the garden to explore! They even created an app which allows you to search the plants in the garden so that you can easily find your favorite ones! Plus, there’s a tram that makes a loop around the outside of the garden so you can get from one side to the other quickly!
I highly suggest making a trip to the NYBG to check out this exhibit and the rest of their fantastic grounds!
