I have always wanted to do this run/walk and it was such a lovely route that I am so glad I finally did it. Even though the city can be a bit of an urban sprawl, for those who love be active and in nature - I believe New York still has such a great selection of outdoor amenities. I absolutely love the Riverside Park and Hudson River Park and the fact that these two areas connect to allow pedestrians and cyclists to easily travel the entire length of Manhattan. Both Riverside Park and Battery Park are sentimental places I’ve spent a lot of time in the past and I’ve always wanted to complete a run between the two. I started at Riverbank State Park - 145 street, Harlem - this park has a running track in it, and other sports amenities as well as a trendy restaurant Sofrito with great views of the Washington Bridge. From here I found myself running below the highway and past a popular BBQ restaurant in Harlem until I eventually came to steps that led me to Riverside Park - from here the run became a bit more of a straight route. I really enjoyed my time but in winter months I would definitely recommend doing this a bit earlier. I was so glad that I got to watch the sun set from the Riverbank State Park and then by the time I made it to Midtown and Battery Park it was properly dark so I got some beautiful view of the illuminated skyline. As great as this was, I had timed my run in a way that I ended up running through Riverside Park at dusk which I know is not safe. When timing a run, safety is key - I usually will not run in parks in the dark - in future I would definitely time this for the morning during winter months. Also, If distance isn’t too important to you - you could start from Riverside park at 112 street rather than 145 where I did. Cycling would be another fun way to experience this route and there are great cycling lanes. You could also walk this route and plan lots of pitstops because there were many fun things to see along the way.
