Moving Tips for NYC - Using a U-Haul Truck
This is a super random post, BUT I moved recently and wish this information was more readily available online. Annoyingly for my move, I had to move out the last of the month and couldn’t move in until the first of the next month. So there was a night where I had to put my things. I didn’t want to spend $1k+ on movers and storage. So many people I talked to suggested I get a U-Haul and park it on the street overnight. Also, so many people said don’t park it on the street. Being the rule follower that I am, I was scared to park it on the street because overnight street parking of commercial vehicles (any U-Haul truck) is illegal in NYC. Though a lot of advice online said worst that could happen is getting a ticket. There was also the concern of someone trying to break into the U-Haul. No garages take commercial vehicles - they don’t fit. BUT if you’re lucky enough to find a parking lot, that’s your best bet! Park Fast has multiple locations throughout the city and some (not all) have lot parking. Some locations are garages and some just have the stacked car parking, which for obvious reasons would not take a U-Haul truck. Luckily I was close to one with lot parking. The location in Hell’s Kitchen charges $40 per 12-hour period. I’ve read some online reviews saying the attendants are scammers and will charge you almost double (saw someone online say they were charged $200 to park their car overnight), so just fyi. Thankfully, this location was true to their pricing and I paid $80 for 24 hours. Parking it in the lot also provides extra security in that your stuff is less likely to be stolen (though never impossible 💀). Hoping this helps someone out there because I was stressing so much trying to figure out what to do with the truck that I got no sleep 💀.
