Learn something new in the UMass Boston University Archives!
Ever been curious about what Boston was like in the past? Look no further than the archives of your local library! As a public university, UMass Boston's University Archives and Special Collections are open to the public! Located on the 5th floor of Healey Library, right on the scenic ocean-side campus. Feel free to take a stroll along the Harbor Walk before or after your visit! The University Archives host not only records of the UMass system, but also some archives of the larger city itself, including Judge Wendell Arthur Garrity's personal chamber papers on the Boston School Desegregation case! The official court papers of the case are housed at the Massachusetts Archive, only a short walk away on the other side of campus, across from the JFK Library/Museum. However, his personal papers, such as letters he saved from constituents and activists reflecting their reactions on the case, are all at the University archives. Interestingly, Billy Bulger (the notorious Whitey Bulger's brother), who was president of the UMass System at the time, was against the UMB archive taking in those papers for preservation, but gave in to the pressure of the chancellor and UMB archivist in order to avoid more bad press. The Archives Research Room is available by appointment only, to view archival collections, Special Collections books, and theses or dissertations. Appointments are available 10 am- 3:30pm Monday through Thursday. Archivists can also provide remote services. To schedule a research appointment, request digitization of UASC materials, and for all other inquiries, please email: library.archives@umb.edu Here are some University websites with more information: Departments - UMass Boston OPEN ARCHIVES NEWS | Our Collections
