🎟️ Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, ME
🌱 This fair is in the middle of the woods! You park in a grass parking area and walk into the woods for a few minutes before you arrive at the grounds. We got a free booklet detailing the event and the local vendors that were there. The best part of this event is their emphasis on a clean environment. They had trash bins organized by dirt and clean paper, compost, recyclables, etc. There were compost outhouses in the woods along the way, food vendors were labeled with an environmentally friendly icon if they met the MOFGA standards. There were plants and fresh flowers for sale, honey from local bees, handmade items and animal products, and a vast array of clothing options with eco-friendly initiatives. The company that makes the fair ground’s shirts uses 100% water ink!
🐑 There were lots of animals to see! Rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, and cattle! There was a very clear emphasis on education both around the animal species and the environment the fairgrounds was held in. My favorite animal to see here was the sheep with the sheepdogs. They held an event to showcase how sheepdogs are used on the farm, what their training is, and how they interact with the sheep. It was very entertaining to watch them zip around the pen and showoff their skills!
🍕 The food was delicious, and there were so many options it was almost overwhelming! Being from Connecticut, I was a little disappointedto find out that fried dough with pizza sauce and cheese is a CT only thing, but the maple cream fried dough made up for it by far!
🎨 So many beautifully talented artists were here showcasing their various art forms. I especially loved seeing works from the Hudson museum which were featuring native/indigenous artwork. The art was absolutely stunning, and I’d definitely recommend checking this part out the most if you go!
🌾 Overall, this fair was an amazing time. It’s open until Sunday 9/22, and runs every year! There’s so much more to see than I can fit in this post.
