$10 carnegie hall tickets | 002
More people should take advantage of this opportunity. Student tickets to carnegie hall are $10 if you sign up online through their student insider program and verify your status. Student tickets to the met opera are $35 and student tickets to the New York philharmonic are $25. The entire performance pavilion also has rush tickets for same-day purchasing of tickets for the concert. As a student studying classical music in NYC, I always want to make people aware that classical concerts don't have to break the bank! Since these concerts don't use microphones, the best spots acoustically are actually the nosebleeds.
This concert was Tsuuji Nobuyuki, aka Nobu, performing with the Orpheus chamber orchestra. Nobu was born blind at birth but, through his superhuman virtuosity for the piano, has all but overcome his disability in this aspect of his life, using music as his lifeline between the seeing world and his own mind. The Orpheus chamber orchestra is a 30-person orchestra with no conductor. Chamber ensembles are what one would call such a conductor-less group, but those seldom make it past 10 people as it quickly becomes extremely difficult to keep tempo without a maestro or maestra. The Orpheus chamber ensemble relies on one another with blind faith and utter trust, being in-tuned to the music totally to keep tempo. Thus their collaboration with Nobu is not only technical but symbolic.
Plus metro fare, the whole experience is less than $20 per person. Unless you stop for Taco Bell like we did.
