Great Food, Live Music & Good Vibes @ Tomi Jazz
Last night a couple friends and I visited Tomi Jazz in Midtown East for dinner and some live jazz music. I had heard about this place from a friend who spoke very highly of it! However they don’t take reservations, so I suggest getting there early. My friends and I got there around 5:30 PM on a Thursday and were seated by 6:30 PM, but I’ve heard of people waiting up to 2 hours. They have heaters outside which is nice though!
Once inside, I understood why the wait was so long, the place is seriously tiny. It gives major speakeasy vibes. The interior is super rustic and dark, with an interesting mix of Japanese and Western influences. There’s a ton of cool antique-y decorations adorning the walls and even old photographs (we were trying to figure out who the people were lol, maybe old family members? Old building owners? It’s a mystery).
The food and drinks were delicious. We stuck with mocktails, but they have an extensive drink menu. And for food, we got Corn Croquettes, Crab Cream Croquettes, Tofu Salad, Fresh Cucumbers with Miso, Cod Roe Udon, Okonomiyaki and Honey Toast with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. All the food was surprisingly good! But the udon, tofu salad and honey toast were my favorites. Just look at the size of that Honey Toast! It came out and my jaw literally dropped. In addition, everything was reasonably priced!
The music and ambiance were amazing too. My friends and I just kept saying “wow, this is so nice…” the whole time haha I felt like I was in a movie. The musicians were playing a mix of classics like Frank Sinatra, some fun modern covers, some older jazz songs I didn’t know, and some Broadway songs as well. It was great vibes overall, definitely worth the wait and seems like a great date spot. One thing to note, there’s a $10 cover on Fridays-Sundays, but I highly recommend checking it out!
