Real stories from real people at The Moth
I’ve always heard about The Moth (also forever ingrained in my brain from that Girls episode) but have never planned well enough ahead of time to go. Last night I finally saw my first StorySlam and was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. The prompt was “Limits” and I laughed, gasped, and I even saw some people cry: high jinks in a Barnes & Noble parking lot, a quest for a secret sauce recipe, a blind date gone wrong, stories of grief and loss, and naked bonding in an Amsterdam sauna. It was amazing and inspiring to watch normal people perform and tell such stories from their own lives.
Each storyteller’s name is chosen out of a hat—giving it all a sense of suspense about what kind of person or story you’ll hear next! Audience members can submit their own short blurbs, which the host will read in between sets and riff off of—I was too scared of being roasted to participate lol
This one was at a super cool venue in Brooklyn: The Bell House. There were drinks flowing and a huge crowd. Make sure you buy your tickets a week or so in advance—it’ll sell out! Well worth the price of $18.
