This might be a hot take!
Have you been eyeing a special pair of earrings, maybe on the hunt for a gorgeous vintage leather bag?
You can probably find it for half or less the cost in Tepito! Tepito is notorious for being a huge marketplace where you can find almost everything and anything sold to you by locals. If you’re looking for that authentic taste of Mexican culture, this market is a must, especially on the weekend!
Here are my tips for concurring Tepito:
- Never go alone and make sure to hold on to your stuff tight. Because it’s such a crowded area, pickpocketing can occur. Don’t make yourself a target. (Go with a tour group if you don’t have local besties like I do!)
- Don’t be afraid to haggle with locals, get that deal! Most sellers will have amazing vintage clothing & jewelry pieces.
- Shopping is always better with a cold drink, grab a local Agua Fresca or if you’re like me, a SimiChela (Mexican beer in a Dr. Simi cup!)
- If you’re visiting July-August, make sure to have a poncho on hand, this is CDMX rainy season.
Many say to avoid Tepito in general, I say, danger is everywhere, just be smart.
