Today I got to learn how to play riichi mahjong at the Sparrow’s Nest Studio. It is located on the 5th floor.
The owner introduced the space to us, and we were separated into 2 groups — beginners and people familiar with mahjong. As I am familiar with Chinese mahjong, I was placed with the latter group.
I was super excited to play on the fancy mahjong tables, as I’ve heard of them but never got to see them in person (until today!!!). The tables shuffle the tiles and places them neatly on the table. It also rolls the dice.
Our teacher was very good in explaining the rules and discussing the difference between Chinese mahjong and riichi mahjong. He also helped us determine the points. My group was able to play a full game, and stayed there for about 3 hours. I won twice hehe 😄
This was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend visiting this place, and definitely plan to come again!...More

This was a fantastic experience! We had a bunch of beginners split into tables and each table got an experienced teacher showing us the ropes, so we were hands on from minute 1. We were only scheduled for 1.5 hours but time flew and we ended up playing for 3.5 hours!
They’re open from Thursdays to Sundays from 4-10pm and every other Saturday is $10 for all day play. I could definitely see myself coming back soon :)...More

i have never been exposed to mahjong, but wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. this was the perfect place to do so because the staff there was super friendly!! their explanations were easy to understand, they were patient & it was fun to play overall. their prices are really good, i love how passionate they are about the game. would 100% be back! 😆💝...More

Such a great experience learning and playing Mahjong! I took the introductory lesson for about 1.5hrs, where we were taught the basic rules, history, and scoring. After the lesson, we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted to continue to practice. Everyone was so friendly and encouraging— a very supportive environment! They also sell some Mahjong merch and snacks. Will definitely be back!...More
