Last week. After hours of nodding and staring at art I didn’t fully understand at the MoMA, we were able to check out The Modern, a two Michelin-starred contemporary American restaurant by Chef Thomas Allan located in the museum. The restaurant is split into three sections: an à la carte menu known as the Bar Room, The Modern’s prix fixe 4-course menu, and a tasting menu located in the heart of the restaurant’s kitchen, known as The Kitchen Table. After sitting down and tasting dishes such as their steak tartare, tarte flambé, rhubarb and custard mille feuille, and more, I was in shock that “museum food” could taste so good. The idea for The Modern came from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, who for years now has helped bring legendary restaurants to NYC such as Eleven Madison Park, Tabla, and many others. Their commitment to culinary excellence shines through at The Modern, where fine dining meets artistic expression. Whether you’re a seasoned food enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable dining experience, The Modern at MoMA is a must-visit destination....More

Restaurant Week in NYC runs January 21 - February 9. 611 restaurants are participating by offering 2-course lunches and 3-course dinners at $30, $45 and $60. For dinner, my strategy is to find restaurants I wouldn’t normally go to. The more dollar signs the better, to feel like a good deal! On Wednesday, we tried The Bar Room at The Modern. The Modern is a two Michelin star restaurant. While The Bar Room does not also have a Michelin star, I can confirm it is very good! Summary of what my friends and I got, below! Starters - all great: chilled tuna, smoked eggplant and grapefruit mortadella and burrata toast with maple steak tartare with crispy potatoes Mains: hand-cut mafaldine with braised rabbit and brussels sprouts roasted chicken with ricotta, preserved tomato and chili pork tenderloin and belly, grilled leeks and cornichons - this is the one I ordered and liked it the most! Dessert: speculoos cherry terrine with toasted meringue chocolate sabayon, buckwheat and honey tres leches, salted caramel and coconut ^^ I liked the first and third ones, very unique flavors! We also had some drinks. I got a paper plane and truly the best I ever had! ...More

It’s Restaurant Week season! One of my favorite seasons in NYC. My logic during restaurant week is to find the most expensive restaurants, so I feel good about getting a deal. Restaurant week runs for 3 weeks (ends February 9th) and usually does $45 for a 2-3 course lunch and $60 for a 3 course dinner across 400+ participating restaurants. First up for me is The Bar Room at the Modern, set inside the museum. Let’s talk appetizers- we got: steak tartare with crispy potatoes, chilled tuna with eggplant, and mortadella with Burrata. The flavors were so rich in all 3 appetizers but my personal favorite was the mortadella with buratta. I give this course of the meal a 10/10 and usually this would have been more expensive outside of restaurant week! Oh and let’s not forget the welcome bread! I think I need to go back and ask for a loaf of this bread and a stick of that butter because both of them together was the best combo! Let me know if you go here and thoughts on it!...More

The Modern is a two Michelin-starred restaurant right off of the MoMa serving contemporary American dishes in a very artsy environment. Know before you go: the Bar Room at the Modern, which is participating in this season's NYC Restaurant Week, is its adjacent bar and eatery (however, it is technically a different restaurant than the Modern itself.) We tried 3 of their RWeek entrées: 1. hand-cut mafaldine with braised rabbit and brussels sprouts (this is what I ordered and it was my favorite!) 2. pork tenderloin and belly, grilled leeks and cornichons 3. herb-stuffed chicken with ricotta, preserved tomato and chili We absolutely loved each of these dishes and I would recommend as a great spot to check out during this deal! Strongly encourage you to make a reservation well in advance, or to sign up for alerts for a table to free up if you want to go here. It was packed when we arrived at 7p, and just as packed at 9:45p when we left! Make a rez here: https://www.sevenrooms.com/explore/thebarroomatthemodern/reservations/create/search ...More
