@Sโmore City sent me 2 a Salsa Class @ Sounds of Brazil or SOBโs NYC๐for a @TriedandTrue experience yesterday.
๐๏ธ Cost: 20$
๐Nearest train: Varick St 1๐ด right in front of SOBโs.
$$$$: Drinks, shots (tiny) & eats are 18$ & up, & yes thats during their happy hour๐ซข Coat check is $ only, pretty much mandatory & down extremely steep stairs. No elevator. Venue has ATM machine that will charge you 6$ to withdraw. 6-10$ for coats, bags or other items.
SOBโs VENUE: Big center stage, 1 full service bar & 1 small bar. 2 table areas on each side of the stage. 1 small VIP area. 2 tiny bathrooms. No A/C so the more crowded,(& IT WAS EXTREMELY CROWDED) the more youโll sweat, even if youโre just standing there. Lots of strobing lights.
EXPERIENCE: Showed my ID & ๐๏ธat the entrance, asked where the salsa class would be happening & was told 2 go right in. Entered an open dance floor full 2 the brim of ppl dancing. Looked like a regular club. Asked multiple staff where the salsa class was taking place & none of them had a clue what I was talking about. Chaotic & disorganized AF. After being guided 2 coat check downstairs & coming back up, I was surprised 2 hear the DJ on the center stage,(now emceeing)introducing himself as an instructor from the Piel Canela Dance Company. He announced the โclassโ was beginning. At this point, the club was packed 2 the max. If u werent standing at the right angle, 2 giant columns on each side of the stage were blocking him from view completely. If u happened to find a standing spot with a good angle but u were short, u probably only caught his upper body, no visuals on the steps. Every1 stepping on/knocking into eachother. Instructor was charismatic, offering every1 there 1 free month of classes at Piel Canela Dance Company by texting a number he announced. That being said: if you ACTUALLY want 2 learn how 2 dance? DONT do it at this venue. Actual teaching was maybe 20 mins? despite the event being advertised as 2 & 1/2 hrs long. ...More

This was my first Salsa Lesson ever, and was really fortunate that I got to try it through @TriedandTrue . The environment was phenomenal, and the instructor was very charismatic. At the beginning, I was really nervous because I went to this event by myself and I am not that social, but this event was really welcoming and friendly. I was having so much fun dancing and felt so comfortable that I ended up asking people to dance with me. I even made friends that night, and we are planning to go back together!
Ps:
I would suggest getting there before 6:30pm because there was a line, and I heard people mentioning that itโs free if you enter before 6:30pm.
Also, bring cash if you plan to check in coats, as they only accept cash and charge $6 per coat. They have an ATM inside in case you end up needing cash....More

Def did not disappoint! I havenโt danced samba in such a long time and I had no idea there was a huge community out here! It was such a good time guys!
They teach you the moves in the beginning so you get a chance to practice to the music before they open up the circle and allow every and anyone to dance!
They also had professional samba dancers that gave us a little performance and if youโre feeling it, they might ask you to come up on stage and show us way you just learned! Literally no one was sitting down and thatโs my kind of party!
I will say though, if you do get the tickets, you MUST get there before 7 otherwise they wonโt honor your ticket. I also received push back as they couldnโt find name in their system so not sure if that was a sโmores error but we eventually worked it out :)
So grab your girls or guys and check this out! Such a fun little gem in the city :)...More

I literally manifested winning that free ticket to Sounds of Brazil (S.O.B.โs) because thereโs no way the universe just hands me a perfect night like that for no reason. The second I walked in, the energy was insaneโlike, the kind of vibe that makes you wanna throw your bag in a corner and just dance your heart out.
The music?? Unreal. They were playing EVERYTHINGโAfrobeats, reggaeton, Brazilian funk, all mixed so seamlessly that I couldnโt stop moving if I tried. And the crowd?? Pure serotonin. Everyone was hyping each other up, no bad vibes, just sweaty, happy, unstoppable energy. I swear I made a whole squad of new besties just by screaming lyrics with them.
Oh, and the drinks? I had a caipirinha (because, duh, Brazil), and it was so fresh and citrusy but also lowkey dangerous because it went down TOO easy. The bartenders were also SO funโliterally dancing while making drinks like they were part of the show.
I donโt know how to explain it, but S.O.B.โs isnโt just a barโitโs an experience. Itโs a place where you go to feel alive, to dance until your legs give out, and to meet people who are on the same chaotic, fun-loving wavelength as you. And I got in for FREE?? Like, is this my peak?? Probably. 12/10, Iโm obsessed....More
