Oh, Penny Park in Evanston—aka the ultimate wooden maze of chaos and joy! If you haven’t been, let me paint the picture: it’s one of the only old-school wooden playgrounds left in the Chicagoland area, and it’s basically a child’s dream… and a mom’s cardio workout.
You will lose your kid for at least seven minutes. That’s just part of the deal. One second they’re by the swing, the next they’ve disappeared into a labyrinth of tunnels, towers, bridges, and those tiny windows where they pop their head out like “SURPRISE!” while you’re half a second away from calling in a helicopter.
But the charm is real. It’s whimsical, nostalgic, and built like it was designed by kids with wild imaginations and no concern for adult eyesight or navigation skills. And there’s always that one parent (me) who ends up playing hide and seek and gets way too competitive about it.
It’s got the kind of magic you don’t see at those big plastic chain parks. This one feels like it was made with heart—and splinters. Just kidding (sort of).
Bottom line: bring coffee, wear sneakers, and prepare to have your child beg to stay just five more minutes… for the next hour. Penny Park is pure, old-school joy—and worth every second....More
